Ketubah
What is a Ketubah?
Simply put, a Ketubah is a Jewish wedding contract.
What does a Ketubah say?
We have many options of Ketubah text to choose from, as well as an option to write your own. While these days, different denomenations have different requirements and allowances for ketubah text, it is essentially a contract between partners on their wedding day, stating their obligations to each other. Some denominations use text that is relatively standardized, for example, an orthodox Ketubah does not generally differ from couple to couple, whereas a secular couple may choose to write their own Ketubah, treating it more like an extension of their vows. In either case, if you are being married by a Rabbi, we strongly recommend you show the text to them before purchasing.
What is the process for ordering a Ketubah?
Start by picking your favorite design from the options available. When you are on the product page for the Ketubah you're interested in, you can view and choose from the different text options directly on that page by selecting a specific text option from the drop-down, or by clicking the option to view all text options at once. If you are having any trouble choosing which text option is right for you after discussing as a couple, checking with your Rabbi or officiant is a great next step. You can always
From the drop-down menu, you can choose your preferred text, choose to send us your custom text, or choose the option to pick your text later. Once you've picked your option on the product page, you can add your Ketubah to your cart and purchase it straight away.
Once your order is placed, you'll get an email with a form that asks you to fill in your personalization options such as names, wedding date and location, etc. You can also use this form to let us know if you have any special requests, or if you want to provide completely custom text.
If at any point you feel overwhelmed, pause, take a deep breath and email us at shalom@shoptchotchke.com
Can you translate my text for me?
Absolutely. If you write your own text in either English or Hebrew, we can translate to the other language for a small fee.
What can I customize about my Ketubah?
We have 10 different text options to choose from, and if none of them work for you, we are happy to customize any of the text, in both English and Hebrew. You can choose if you want both English and Hebrew text, or just one. We let you choose how many signature lines, as well as the text that goes under the lines (ie. Bride, Groom, Witness, etc.). You'll be sent a form after purchase to specify all of these details, and there is also space to let us know anything else we can do to make the Ketubah perfect for you. We recommend you run any customizations past your Rabbi to make sure they are comfortable with the Ketubah before having it made.
Are all of the Ketubot Kosher?
It depends on what denomenation you are. Technically a Kosher ketubah should not have any English or Hebrew, but should be written in Aramaic. Most of our Ketubot can be made Kosher, which will be the case anytime Orthodox or Conservative text options are chosen. If a specific design can not be made Kosher, we won't offer that design with the Orthodox text. Outside of Orthodox, and to a lesser extent, Conservative Ketubot, there are fewer guidelines, but we still do strongly recommend you share the final text with your Rabbi for review before printing.
How long will it take to receive my Ketubah?
4-6 weeks. Every Ketubah is different, so after you place an order and fill out the details of what you want on the Ketubah through the form we send you, we will make any updates requested and then send you a proof to review. We suggest you and your Rabbi review the proof carefully, so we can make any updates before printing. After the proof is approved, it takes about a week to print and ship the Ketubah. If you need your Ketubah faster, just let us know and we'll try to make it happen!
What if our wedding is postponed?
If you have already ordered and received your Ketubah, but your wedding date was postponed, let us know as soon as possible and we would be happy to send you a new Ketubah with an updated date. We just ask that you pay for shipping, but there is no charge for the replacement Ketubah.
Does my Rabbi need to approve the Ketubah?
If you're getting married by a Rabbi, we recommend it, but the decision is yours. We will provide a proof that you can send to the Rabbi, and they might have input for you.
What kind of pen should I use to sign the ketubah?
We'll send you a Pigma Micron Archival pen to sign with in the color that looks best with the design you choose. We also provide an extra piece of paper for you to practice signing before commiting to the real thing.
Can I get an un-personalized Ketubah?
For sure- we will just leave blank lines where you fill in your names, date and location yourself. The Ketubah will have English and Hebrew printed as well as 5 signature lines by default.
What if I don't know how to write my Hebrew name in Hebrew?
There are a handful of resources online that let you type in English or pick from a list in English and then will give you the Hebrew name, otherwise, just let us know what it is in English and we'll do our best to translate it for you.
What if I don't know my Hebrew name?
Some people choose to use the transliteration of their English name. If you ask Google for a transliteration of your name into Hebrew, we've found that to work well. We recommend you check with your Rabbi if you decide to do this because it's not universally accepted.
Who should sign my Ketubah?
It all depends how kosher you want to be- for an Orthodox wedding, the Rabbi and 2 unrelated male witnesses sign the Ketubah, not the couple getting married. Many couples these days like to sign their own Ketubah, and don't have the requirement that the witnesses be male. Ultimately the decision is up to you and your Rabbi. We are happy to print more or fewer signature lines on your Ketubah, and label them however you prefer.
What is the difference between a personalized and a custom Ketubah?
All of our Ketubot can be personalized or customized. Personalizing allows you to input personal information (name, date, location, etc) into one of the text options we have to choose from, whereas custom means you provide all of the text that gets printed on your Ketubah. Personalization is included in the cost of the Ketubah, and providing custom text incurs an additional fee- if you provide all of the text in all of the languages you want printed, the additional fee is $48, if any translation is required, the total fee for customization is $96
Does personalizing a Ketubah cost extra?
Nope, personalizing does not cost extra.
What does personalizing include?
The personalization options vary slightly based on which text you choose, but the options include adding both partners names, parents names, wedding date, wedding location, number of signature lines, what is written under the signature lines, and language (English, Hebrew, or both).
Does a custom Ketubah cost extra?
If you choose to provide your own text, we charge an additional $48 because it requires additional typesetting and formatting. If you require translation into either English or Hebrew, that will be an additional $48 for translation services.
Product
Are your products Kosher?
All of our products are Kosher except we do sell 2 different Mezuzah scrolls- one that is Kosher and one that is not.
Will your Menorahs and Shabbos Candlesticks fit regular candles?
They sure will. We think our candles look the best but we're slightly biased.
What tools will I need to hang my Mezuzah
All of our Mezuzahs include a 3M tape strip to mount them to your doorpost. You will need a philips head screw driver for putting the back plate on the metal Mezuzahs.
Are the Mezuzahs suitable for outdoor use?
The metal Mezuzahs are perfect for outdoor use, but we don't recommend placing the ceramic ones where they will get rained on directly as they are not sealed in the back.
Care
How do I clean my ceramic Menorah or candlesticks?
After wax has cooled and hardened, you can use a dull tool (like a plastic utensil, or chopstick) to gently scrape off any excess wax. Ceramics are hand-washable with gentle detergent (treat it like you would a nice ceramic mug). If there is still residue on the product, soak it in hot tap-water for a few minutes to soften the wax and then wipe it clean.
How do I clean my metal Menorah?
Polished metal should be wiped with a soft, damp cloth- if deeper cleaning or polishing is required, use cleaner and polish specially made for aluminum or brass, depending which metal you are cleaning. If wax residue is still present after cleaning, soak it in hot tap-water for a few minutes to soften the wax and then wipe it clean.
Can I put the Kiddish cups in the dishwasher?
Honestly, it's probably fine, but we recommend hand washing because they are kind of fragile.
